Obituary for Donald Lucas

Donald Wayne Lucas, age 77, of Mattoon passed away at 2:35 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at his residence.
Funeral services honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at First Baptist Church, 1804 South 9th Street, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Pastor Dennis Strawn officiating. Burial will follow at Beals Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018 and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Don was born on June 6, 1940 in Newton the son of Paul and Mildred (Byrd) Lucas. He married Marilyn Yvonne Sampson on May 26, 1962. She survives.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include his son, Wayne Donald Lucas of Watson, IL; daughter, Tresa (Mike) Randolph of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Heather (Eli) Heicher of Charleston, IL, Jennifer Lucas of Trilla, IL, Brian Tucker of Sasebo, Japan and Amanda Tucker of Effingham, IL; 4 great grandchildren; and sister, Wanda (Gene) Zimmerman of Decatur, IL. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Bob Lucas.
Don worked at Meadow Gold for 33 years, followed by Prairie Farms for 10 years, KC Summers for 10 years and several years at Birchwood. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mattoon. In earlier years, Don was very active at the CP Church of Trilla, serving as an Elder, Lay Minister, Sunday School teacher, leading the Father and Son outings and various other roles. Don was involved in the Drama Ministry, participating in “I Dreamed I Searched Heaven For You” and Missions, traveling to Haiti. Don was active in Prison Ministry and shared many Gideon Bibles throughout his life. For many years, Don was in charge of the Hog Roast for Trilla Days. He often participated in the Farmers’ Market where he and Marilyn were known for their famous pies. Don never met a stranger. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, but especially cherished time spent with his family and friends.
Memorial donations in his honor are suggested to Lincolnland Hospice.
