Obituary for Virginia Lee (Hayes-Burrow) Metzelaars

Virginia Lee (Hayes-Burrow) Metzelaars passed away, Sunday February 18, 2018 at the age of 95. She peacefully left this life and gained her angel wings while surrounded by her loving family.
Virginia was born in Peckham, OK on February 13, 1923 to Marshall Wesley and Audie Josephine (Phillips) Hayes. She was the second oldest of 5 children, the only girl. Her family lovingly called her Sister. She was preceded in death by her beloved brothers: Clyde, Clarence, and Wesley Hayes, as well as both of her parents, and her daughter-in-law Susan Metzelaars.
Virginia attended Ramsey High School and graduated as Salutatorian and Senior Class President in 1940. She fell in love with the boy that lived next-door to her grandparents in Springfield, MO, Wilburn Wesley Burrow. They married on December 13, 1944 in Springfield, MO. Their life together was cut short when he was killed, while serving with the U.S. Navy during the Battle of Okinawa, on April 6, 1945.
When visiting her brothers, that were working in the oil fields, in Mattoon she met Lawrence R. Metzelaars. They were married August 10, 1946 and moved to Denver, CO. Virginia and Lawrence moved to Mattoon in early 1947. They welcomed their daughter Jolene Kay (Hochleutner) in 1952 and son, Larry Lee in 1957. The two were later divorced.
Virginia lived in the same house for almost 71 years and was often seen around the community. She worked as an Avon lady for many years. Her last job was cashiering at My Store before retiring to care for her grandchildren. Virginia never really felt comfortable behind the wheel of a car but certainly covered every inch of Mattoon by foot and bike. Virginia was an active participant of Water Aerobics and Hinges and Twinges at the Mattoon YMCA. She was there 3 times a week, almost every week, until last May. Virginia loved spending time in her flower beds, doing counted cross-stitch, and doing word puzzles. She would often share her spider plant “babies” with her family and friends.
Virginia’s family was her proudest achievement. Her two children both gave birth to two of their own: Jennifer Kay (Hochleutner) Taylor, Heather Marie (Metzelaars) Green, Susanne Marie (Hochleutner) Selle, and Jason Richard Metzelaars. She would bring her lawn chair and sun visor to all of the baseball, softball, football, soccer, volley ball and swim meets that she could. She was the best Grams imaginable. She loved reading books, listening to music, drawing, and playing Sorry! with them. Her heart was always filled with love and her cookie jar always full.
Virginia is survived by her loving children: Larry (Andre) of Mattoon, IL and Jolene (Daniel) of Freedom, WI, grandchildren: Jennifer (Ralph) Taylor, Heather (Josh) Green, Susanne (Alex) Selle, and Jason (Christa) Metzelaars, and great-grandchildren: Kelly, Hunter, Hailey, Lily, Makenzie, Nolan, Shelby, and an unborn great grandson Tucker due in August. She will be missed by her in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as her brother Clifford (Joan) Hayes.
Celebration of Virginia’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2018 at Schilling Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Mattoon Area YMCA Aquatic Classes Program. They would also like to thank the staff of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Heartland Christian Village, Dr. Lystila and staff at the Carle Clinic in Mattoon, and Neoga Ambulance Service for providing loving care in her final days.
