Obituary for Mary Williams

Mary Marie (Banning) Williams, age 96, of Charleston passed away at 10:47 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2018 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
A graveside service honoring her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Roselawn Cemetery with High Priest Steve Cooley officiating. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mary was born on March 5, 1922 in Charleston, Illinois to Floyd and Viola (Jenkins) Banning. After her mother’s death in 1923, she was taken in by Ernest and Della Noble and raised as a sister to Ethel Clair (“Sissie”) Noble. Mary graduated from Charleston High School in 1939, and married Clarence Dale (“Dutch”) Williams on December 15, 1940 in Kentucky.
In addition to her parents and foster parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, her husband, and her grandson Mark Dale Williams. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Dale and Joyce Ann Williams of Charleston, IL; her granddaughter, Tracy Williams of Chicago, IL; her nephews and nieces and their families, Steve Cooley and his wife Wendy, Jim Williams and his wife Janice, Sam Siebert and his wife Wendy, Judy Strange and her husband Steven, Barbara Curry, Joyce Wilson, and Billie Joe Brayfield, a great-nephew, Zachary Morecraft and his wife Kristen, and a great-niece Megan Strange, and her friends and caregivers Elizabeth Stoner and Julia Furry.
Mary was active in the Charleston community as a local business owner, public servant, and volunteer. In 1950 she began work in her family’s business, Noble Flower Shop, then located at 5th and Jefferson in Charleston. Together with her sister Clair, her husband Dutch, and her son John, she operated the flower shop until her retirement in 1984.
In 1960, Mary was the first woman elected to the Charleston City Council and served as finance commissioner for the City, and the first woman to serve as president of the Illinois State Floral Association.
During her life, Mary served on the Board of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce and was honored as its “Person of the Year.” She served as Grand Marshal of the State of Illinois Order of Job’s Daughters, a worthy matron of Sopha C Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, president of the Charleston Business and Professional Women’s Club, and as a guardian of Bethel 90 International Order of Job’s Daughters. She was a member of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Guild and served on the state board of directors of the Illinois Hospital Association Council of Volunteers. She was active in the Demolay Mother’s Circle and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority.
