Mike as he was known by friends and Papaw as he was known by his grandchildren, left this earthly confine after a prolonged illness. His last days were spent in the presence of his beloved wife Linda, his children Gwena, Landon, John and his eldest granddaughter, Topanga.
Mike was born on November 29th, 1946 in Springfield, Ohio to Jack Cuthbert Maguire and Thelma Leola (Garland) Maguire. Sadly, Mike’s father passed away in March of 1949 and Mike and his Mom made the trip back to St. Louis, Missouri where they resided with Thelma’s family. During these early years Mike was blessed with his beloved cousin Becky who became his playmate and lifelong friend. Thelma later married Charles Joseph “Chick” Bird and Mike joined them at their home in Mattoon, Illinois. Mattoon became home and it’s where Mike graduated high school, met and married his beloved wife Linda Kay (Gillespie) on November 4, 1966 and where they raised their three children, Gwena, Michael “Landon” and John. Mike began working at Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company in the late 1960’s and remained with the company until his retirement several years ago. Mike and Linda instilled in their children a strong work ethic and Mike also instilled in them a low tolerance for BS. Mike’s grandchildren will remember him as a loving man who was devoted to his wife and someone who loved to tease them and cheat at UNO.
Mike was preceded in death by all three of his parents listed above. He is survived by his devoted wife, loving children, son-in-law Darren Zike, daughter-in-law Kristen Maguire and the following grandchildren: Topanga Zike, Charisma Zike, Bodaway Zike, Michael James “MJ” Maguire, Mason Maguire and Weston Maguire. He is also survived by his beloved cousin Becky and numerous nieces and nephews.
