Obituary for Virginia May Hortenstine

Virginia May (Carroll) Hortenstine, age 90, of Gays passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at her residence.
Graveside services honoring her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Branch Side Cemetery, Gays with Pastor Pat Powers and Pastor Johnny Aseltine officiating. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Virginia was born on May 19, 1928 in Mattoon the daughter of Verne and Anabel (Edwards) Carroll.
Survivors include her loving husband of 67 years, Jacob Hortenstine of Gays, IL; children, Jeffrey (Dorothy) Hortenstine, Sarah Beth Hortenstine-Kirk, Salisa (Tom)
Hortenstine Olmsted, and Henry (Jill) Hortenstine; grandchildren, Jennifer, Jammie, Julie, Jessica, Jason, Bethany, Baylee, Bostyn, Brennyn, Steffen, Cydney, Ciara, Claire, and Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Jacob, Abby, Jackson, Carson, Caelyn, Jace, Elyse, Ava, Gracie, Harrison, Harlow, Presley, Stella, Madisyn, and Dallas. Virginia was preceded in death by grandson, Jeffrey Hortenstine and son-in-law, Mike Kirk.
Virginia attended Boling Country School through 6th grade, Windsor Jr. High School, and graduated from Windsor High School in 1946. Virginia later graduated from Utterbacks Business School in 1947 and the Hallford School of Beauty in 1948. Shortly after finishing Cosmetology School, she met the love of her life, Jake Hortenstine. They were married on January 7, 1951 and started their married life living with Jake’s parents. In July of 1951, they moved to Shelbyville, Illinois. While living there, they were blessed with two children. In 1955, they returned to Gays to live in the home place where Jake was born. There they were blessed with two more children. Virginia loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed collecting antiques and was a jewelry collector back to her high school days. She was a member of Gays Christian Church where she was the secretary for more than 40 years and taught Sunday School. Virginia was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Moultrie County Farm Bureau and Home Extension and was election judge for Moultrie County for many years. She was also a former member of the Sarah Bush Health Guild. Virginia never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone. She will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all those who knew and loved her.
