Obituary for Phillip Carter

Phillip E. Carter, age 81, of Mattoon passed away at 12:50 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his residence.
Memorial services honoring his life will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Central Community Church with Josh Butler and Jeremy Morton officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 p.m. until time of service at the church. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Phillip was born on October 8, 1936 in Mattoon, the son of R. Kenneth and Edythe (Beason) Carter. He married Judith Ann Dodd on November 20, 1955. She preceded him in death on February 5, 2016.
Survivors include his sons, Gary (Sheila) Carter and Glenn Carter all of Mattoon, IL; daughter, Julia (Carl) Lauer of Roanoke, TX; grandchildren, Jeff (Jennifer) Carter of Boise, ID, Greg (Sara) Carter of Mattoon, IL, Sara (John) Pruitt, Kiley (Josh) Butler and Alex Carter of Mattoon, IL; great grandchildren, Meah, Abby, Lily, Carter, Mac, Chloe, Nate, Pia and Jake; siblings, Ann (Don) Clark of Mattoon, IL, Edythe (Paul) Hoglan of Snowflake, AZ, Mike (Carol) Carter of Mattoon, IL, Judy (Dick) Montague of Windsor, IL and John (Karen) Carter of Mattoon, IL.
Phillip served honorably in the United States Navy. He worked as an electrician and was a forty-eight-year member of the IBEW Local 146 in Decatur, IL. Phillip was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Illinois Basketball fan. He enjoyed woodworking and attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. Phillip’s primary hobby since 1955 was making Judith happy by doing whatever she wanted him to do. Phillip treasured his faith, family and friends. Most of all, Phillip loved spending time with his family. He was happiest when his home was filled with family. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
