Bud was born on October 21, 1931 in Mattoon, Illinois the son of the late Albert A. and Mildred (Leeds) Bower. He married Gail Mary Kuehnle on December 21, 1952.
Survivors include his loving wife, Gail Bower of Charleston, IL; sons, Bruce Bower of Champaign, IL, Brian (Mary) Bower of Charleston, IL and Douglas (Mary) Bower of Charleston, IL; daughter, Karen (Ryan) Smith of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Matthew Bower, Benjamin Bower, Libby Bower, Brian Bower Jr., Michael Bower, Evan Bower, Andrew Bower, Sarah Bower and Tristan Smith; great-grandchildren, Gregory Bower, Jacasta Bower, Ally Bower and Dylan Bower. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, loving step-father Frank Miller, and son Paul Bower.
Bud served honorably in the Infantry as 1st Lieutenant in the Adjutant General’s Department. He graduated from Law School at the University of Illinois in 1957. Bud joined H Ogden Brainard in the practice of law in 1957 and Brainard and Bower Law Firm was formed. This practice later became Brainard, Bower and Kramer and then The Brainard Law Office. He retired from the practice of law in 2012. Bud was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston where he had served as both an Elder and choir member. He was proud to be a member of the Masonic Order where he was a Past Master of the Charleston Lodge #35 A.F. & A.M. Bud was founder of the ‘noisey table’ at the Charleston Rotary Club, and past President of the Coles Cumberland Bar Association. Bud loved the law and his profession. Although he had a fierce and gruff way about him, he had the kindest heart. Bud was a loyal friend and through his profession helped many. Bud loved fishing with his “boys” in Canada and golfing at the Country Club. He played several roles with the Charleston Community Theatre. In recent years, Bud enjoyed his time as a “snow bird” in Florida, having many golfing and choir friends at the Glades Presbyterian Church. Bud took great joy in life, loving his family above all else. Being an only child, he was often surprised and delighted with his many wonderful children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He took great pride in all their accomplishments. Bud will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him.
Memorial donations in his honor may be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
